What are steroids used for in MS?

Most people will benefit from a low-sodium diet, but perhaps this is even more important for those taking Prednisone. A diet high in salt will result in the body retaining around 1.5 litres of excess fluid. Steroids taken for a long time can also cause your muscles to become weaker, and they might occasionally affect periods in women. Steroids can be taken in a number of ways for many different types of arthritis and related conditions, as shown in the table below.

Alcohol also increases the speed at which opioid painkillers release into the bloodstream, causing codeine to release rapidly. This results in dangerously high blood intoxication levels, primarily affecting the brain’s ability to function normally. Whilst Codeine is one of the weaker opioid painkillers available, especially at over-the-counter strengths, it is still possible to overdose on the drug if it is abused. Mixing prescription-strength codeine with alcohol is especially dangerous.

Often steroids are taken in ‘cycles’ of weeks on, followed by weeks off, then on again. They are also used for ‘stacking’, which is where you take several types of steroids together to strengthen their effects. It can dramatically increase the effects of the drug, leading to a much higher risk of ‘going under’ (overdosing and losing consciousness) and vomiting. If the problem progresses, many litres of fluid can build up, which needs to be drained. This is a procedure known as paracentesis and involves a long, thin tube being placed into the fluid through the skin under local anaesthetic. A person with portal hypertension may also develop a build-up of fluid in their abdomen (tummy) and around the intestines.
